My Teaching Philosophy:I believe great art is not made with a formula. My goal is to instill in each student an ability to self-critique, to analyze and incorporate the genius of great artists past and present, and to develop a unique voice. A solid foundation of design principles, knowledge of the human figure, and a strong work ethic are what I hope to foster in my students. One of my goals is to encourage students who want to create multi-figure narrative paintings. My strengths are in composition and design, in textural and incidental processes, in creating beautiful art objects for galleries and homes. I like to combine traditional academic methods of teaching with modern approaches.
In summary, I would like to teach you if you:
- are committed to learning
- are a hard worker
- want to compose imaginatively
- love a wide variety of approaches to design
- love a wide variety of artists throughout art history
Options for Study:
1. For Children and Young Teens:
I don't offer lessons for children or young teens. In my opinion, children should be encouraged to experiment and do their own thing. They have a wonderful naivete' that shouldn't be messed with. Click here for a few suggestions on how to encourage their creativity.
2. Consultation:
Those who are interested in feedback from me may email me a high-res photo of their work. I'll email and/or telephone with my feedback. I charge $35 for a single consultation on a single painting. Each following consultation on the same painting is also $35.
3. Once a Month Class:
This class is open to a wide range of students, beginning to advanced. We meet once a month to work on the students projects for 2 1/2 hours. Class size is limited to seven students. Cost is $35 per class. A four month commitment at the very least is requested. Click here for more information.
4. Advanced Figure Painting Class:
This class meets four times a month, with an emphasis on painting the human figure, large multi-figure composition, and plein air landscape. Class size is limited to five students. Cost is $160 per month. A four month commitment at the very least is requested. Click here for more information.
5. Apprenticeship:
The apprenticeship is an opportunity for an artist to work closely with me. The student must have a great work ethic and be committed to a career as an artist. My goal is to teach the apprentice everything I know from the progressive copy exercises of the academics, to the human figure, to imaginative design and memory work, to innovative and experimental expression. The apprentice is given space in my studio to work and study. A four year commitment is required. Class size is limited to one student. Cost is $6000 per year. Click here for more info.
6. Workshops and Boot Camp:
I teach various workshops throughout the year. Below is a list of upcoming and recent workshops. If you'd like to set up a workshop in your area, send me an email.
