Directions:Click here and start by referring again to the simplified color schemes. Choose a color scheme--not necessarily the same colors as the examples provide, but rather the same relationships. For example, if you want to try an accented neutral color scheme, you might consider doing a painting using black and white with a yellow accent.
Get out your circle composition again, and let's make a painting. If you're sick of your circle composition, you are welcome to do a new geometric composition with circles or squares. I'd prefer that you do this with acrylic paint, if possible, but I'm open to other options. This painting's largest dimension should be at least 11 inches.
There are four important things:
1. Your painting should look a lot better than my sorry attempt at a photoshop version shown here.
2. The colors in your painting should reflect the color scheme you have chosen.
3. Rather than having strictly geometric edges, the edges should breath. You should have a wide variety of marks, some soft and some hard. Feel free to draw into your wet paint with pencils to accomplish this.
4. You should have a variety of incidental/organic textures in your painting.
When I say incidental, I mean textures that you can't control very well. Some ideas for getting incidental textures would be:
1. Pour a thin layer of water over your acrylic painting. Mix a little bit of paint in the water and see how the pigments settle on your painting. Let it dry.
2. Lightly sand through the layers of your painting in specific areas to reveal the colors underneath.
3. Roll paint onto leaves and stamp your painting with the painted leaves.
4. Cover your painting with dried leaves, then do an acrylic wash over your painting. Let it dry and then remove the leaves.
5. Use a roller to apply a thin layer of paint onto a piece of cellophane. Put the cellophane on your painting face down, and draw on the cellophane, so that small amounts of paint transfer to your painting.
6. There are a million ways to get organic texture. Make up some of your own.
